Adding bullets and numbering in Word

I am writing this post because today two people I know were driving themselves crazy trying to get Word to number and bullet properly. Often happens when you have more than one line and not just a list. It’s important to go back to basics and remind yourself to check and double check settings. Sometimes you have to clear the settings out. Word is designed with big companies and offices in mind and so if you change what you are doing frequently you can sometimes fall foul of the settings. You can read straight forward instructions here on computerhope. There are times when it’s most certainly not you – it’s them – and the best thing to do is Google for help with something like: how to fix numbering in Word 2013. You If nothing else you will be comforted to know it’s not just you!!

Deskbot

Back in the 90s desktop toys and avatars were all the go on Windows computers. I had a man climbing a ladder and a little mouse who used to play the violin and eat scones. They were toys. Brain breaks. We used to have Clippy too and other animated avatars to help us with spreadsheets. They went out of vogue but you can install Deskbot and it runs on Microsoft Agent as did the desktop toys and avatars. Deskbot will read text to you. On the one I have downloaded I can only get American English, it sounds a bit robotic but is nevertheless a very helpful genie which is the only avatar/personal/bot currently available to me. I got it to read a whole blog post to me. Great asset for if you want to hear something rather than read it. Great asset if you are learning to read or learning to read in another language. Great asset if you need someone to read to you because you cannot see the text very easily. So Genie has those uses and would have plenty more. He is about saving time, energy, accessibility, literacy. Pretty handy little deskbot. You can read a detailed review here on makeuseof. You can download the deskbot here  free from Bellcraft. There is no malware which comes with it or extra programs you might not want. it takes a few seconds to download, a few more seconds to install and a couple of minutes to go through the options of the setup. I look forward to exploring this more.

Fixing Windows 10 temporary profile pain

Windows 10 temporary profile Image: tenforums

I got this message yesterday morning and it was too much for my tiny brain on a Sunday morning. Having tried the fix of just restarting the computer a couple of times I just left it and went on to have a lovely day. As I thought about it I decided going to the registry first was not going to be what I’d do. I could locate my files by going onto the  C drive , going to Windows and finding my old profile under Users. The virus and malware checkers were still functioning so I knew what I had loaded previously had to be there. I found appuals site the most helpful because it was going from easy solutions to more complicated ones. On the temporary profile I had linked my Microsoft account and set a PIN as they suggested. I thought maybe that would release my own desktop but no. In the end I did an old fashioned ScanDisk from the dos prompt.

1. Right click on start and select Command Prompt Admin
2. Type in : sfc/scannow
3. It takes about 15 minutes to scan the files and shows you the percentage.
4. Turn off the computer and restart.

The sfc (scan files now) reported no errors and so I wasn’t hopeful. Good news was it had worked and my own lovely profile was back in place! It would appear the fix is easy but what seems to be happening is different fixes are working for different people. By the time you look at tenforums and appuals you have lots of options and hopefully one of them will work for you.

Merge two Word documents into one

insertLast night I was working on an assignment for the Year 10s and worked out duplicating a page would save me a whole lot of time. It’s been a long time since I have needed to merge Word documents so I had forgotten how to do it. You cannot duplicate pages in Word like you duplicate slides in Powerpoint. Luckily , the Microsoft Support instructions work like a charm and I saved myself time and energy. It means you keep formatting, backgrounds, customisations when a cut and paste isn’t the answer. It’s as easy as creating a new page and using the insert function and object, where you insert from a doc file you have. I then just had to delete the bits I did not want.

Windows 10 Day 3

windows key xIt is all going well. The system boots quickly and it shuts down quickly. This version of Windows appears to be operating more smoothly than other versions and I really like it. My latest trick is Windows key then x because bottom left it brings up a menu with things like System, Command Prompt, Control Panel and Networking Centre. Makes it easy to access those critical areas of a computer. Public PicturesI found my pictures which I had not filed into folders. They are in the Public Pictures so you can go to the C drive\Users\Public and you will find the public folders there or you can go to the web and Windows search, type in Public Pictures , then click on My Stuff (seriously!) and it will come up in the search. Windows 10 has been very easy to adapt to.
