BCS User Experience Certificate

UX Certificate I have just completed my second Udemy course. I chose the Introduction to the BCS Foundation Certificate. .BCS is the British Chartered Institute for IT because the course not only explains what is in the certificate testing with BCS, it also explains clearly some of the basic ideas behind approaching User Experience. I found the course enjoyable and to reframe my knowledge through an UX lens was both helpful and interesting. In an ICT world then it really ought to be basic knowledge for teachers and anyone who is going to deliver content via technology. I had plenty of ideas as I was doing the course. I found I could manage it, understand it and feel as though I was benefiting from it. David Travis has a very calm, even tempered approach to delivering information and so you always feel like you are in control of the content. By the end of the course I now have plenty of solid things to follow up on and find out about so it’s a course which has inspired more learning. The other Udemy course I did was Coding for Entrepreneurs Basic with Justin Mitchell. He explained everything well but it was a dense , labour intensive course where I learned so much. I would not have called it basic! By comparison the BCS course was like swimming in calm waters. My plan is to do 5 free Udemy courses. By that time I’ll be familiar with the delivery styles, the way the courses are set up, the sorts of instructors they endorse and how content is delivered online. I really like how I can stop and start according to my mood or time availability. I can learn online for 5 minutes or 30. I choose. I like that. My next course is on wireframing which is how you do mock ups for interfaces. I am looking forward to it.

Learning tiles

mon moi du futur With UX in mind I have just created a tiled approach to a topic which would run from an IWB. It’s a Powerpoint which you can download – mon moi du futur (my future me) – if you would like to. Phones, tablets and internet pages are currently often displayed as tiles so using that approach means students have a familiar interface and for me it means I have everything gathered in one place with hyperlinks and I can see quite clearly what I need to do and what I need to cover. I have videos, web site exercises, a blog, my key sentence to teach and an image to add interest and some extra practice. It is all authentic French. There is a song and grammar videos. Students could use the Powerpoint for flipped learning or going over the things they need to master. With technology it is a good idea to follow the layout patterns which are in use on devices and the internet. It does facilitate  learning  but having set a topic up this way I realise it makes teaching very easy too.

The UX inspired classroom

Webdesignerdepot has a lot of quotes to inspire designers. Teachers are designers too. Give them one piece of useful information and they will transform it into a myriad of ways of teaching that information to all sorts of different people, not just their classes. Teachers are natural designers but we do not pay attention to developing those skills which are now critical in a technological world. So, today, let’s learn from the best. Why are design and user experience important in a classroom?

Some people think design is how it looks but , of course, if you dig deeper, it’s really how it works.

Steve Jobs

User experience is everything. It always has been , but it’s undervalued and underinvested in. If you don’t know user-centred design, study it. Hire people who know it.

Evan Williams, co-founder of Twitter

It’s really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of people don’t know what they want until you show it to them.

Steve Jobs

Details matter. It is worth waiting to get it right.

Steve Jobs

It’s not a challenge of technology. It’s the challenge of our imagination.
