iPad Pro or Surface Pro?

There is some good competition going on now between the iPad Pro and the Surface Pro. It means, down the track, we’ll actually get  really good,  bigger tablets than the ones we currently have. It will come down to price, stylus , battery life and use. We need to stop the notion that one size fits all and work on what users need and want and look at what users are using the device for. For some it will be an iPad Pro because they are used to an iPad and have an iPhone. They can easily go between their devices. For now, the iPad Pro is winning on art work capabilities and camera but the Surface Pro has the computing power and capabilities of a desktop/laptop and is improving all the time. The keyboard may or may not be an issue because it will depend on how you use the keyboard and what you need it for.  They are both bigger and so not so portable as such. An iPad mini or small tablet can just go anywhere really easily. A phone is even more portable.

A bigger tablet, though, takes advantage of the real graphics improvements we have had over the last couple of years. The screen real estate is superior and so can display images and videos better. Why peer at a tiny screen when you can really enjoy and appreciate the graphics quality in 2018?

Tablets are very bad at note taking. You can never write as neatly and as small as on paper. You can’t get the feedback properly and it always comes back to writing like an idiot. Yes, you can do some good artistic writing but for normal note taking there is a long way to go to get that screen response to the stylus and then the accuracy we are capable of with our manual dexterity. If either of those tablets could cross that bridge we’d all be winning. Why write when you can type is how it goes at the moment?

With a larger tablet you’d have to consider screen replacement costs should the screen become damaged. You’d have to know the serial number and have some sort of security apps installed because they are portable and then become a temptation to others. Protecting your tablet would become important as is the case with a laptop but these tablets are expensive and so it would be vital to ensure some sort of security if you were going to be taking them out.

How do you decide? The Surface pro is a lot dearer. For some that will decide it. The simpler models are more comparable in price. There are different versions of each so it is important to look at what you are getting for the price. You then have to look at what you would actually do with a bigger tablet. If you are a computer apps person and use a lot of Windows programmes then that is the way you go. iIf you happily use your iPad apps and your already have computing power in a laptop or desktop then that’s your choice if you want a bigger tablet screen. A lot of people would. They can see the screen better, use the screen better and then make better use of the tablet. You have to be able to sit comfortably with it , though, and so it’s important to consider how you will manage that aspect of tablet use without resting it directly on your body.

Troubleshooting tablet technology

aussieoutagesWhen things go wrong on a tablet or phone you have to keep calm and troubleshoot:

1. Check you have battery resources
2. Check you are connected to wifi/mobile provider if you should be
3. Check national and international outages
4. Close all the open apps
5. Turn off phone/ tablet and turn on again
6. Turn off modem, count to 10 and on again
7. If it is one app then delete it and reinstall it
8. Google like mad to see what the workarounds are.

The aussieoutages site is a good place to go in Australia because it lets you know if there is an issue. For the first time ever I had a problem on my iPad air. Instagram would start opening and then pop shut. Nothing. On my android phone there was no issue so I knew it wasn’t really an Instagram problem per se. I went to aussieoutages and sure enough there were a lot of people having a problem. There can be network conflicts which can create problems and with our current weather there could be things which affect wifi delivery. It was odd it was one device. This afternoon it started working again just fine and that was when I had gone to my iPad ready to delete the app and try reinstalling it. I had just used my phone in the meantime.

iPad/iPhone tips and tricks

split keyboard I didn’t know you could use the volume control on the Apple ear buds to take a front facing photo but I did know a lot of the other tricks. There are so many things to learn and know. It simply is not possible to know everything with technology. The main thing is, to keep the information banks up to date, you need to read through helpful posts like the one 19 Mind-Blowing Tricks Every iPhone And iPad User Should Know.

DIY Light Tent Project

There are plenty of fancier DIY light tents on You Tube and plenty of fancier clips. I chose this one because it is just simple. No fuss, no frills but it shows you clearly how to make a light tent to improve image quality when you are photographing smaller objects. Yes, you can go down the shop and buy a light tent. Making one is a nice little project for children and adults alike. A rainy afternoon project, or a too hot to go outside project, or you have to stay in because there’s too much snow project. It would be a nice way to pass a couple of hours or a double lesson. Personally, I’d use baking paper instead of tissue paper since you can buy a whole roll and use it for baking as well as light tents! Tissue paper is not necessarily so easy to come buy. This way you can get everything in the supermarket. Part of the creativity could be to make it look really cool by using different tape colours and decoration. It needs to be kept simple, though, because the reflective white is the key. The other reason I chose this clip is because you can watch and build at the same time. It is clearly stepped in its procedure and so if you have your tablet, phone or laptop you can have the best of both worlds and use technology to be creative and then enhance your image production. Technology is a tool. It’s not an end in itself. I am always using my tablet to help me actually physically do something in the same way I see people use their phones to photograph someone doing something so they remember the steps. Happy building and happy clicking!

iClassroom iManagement – tips for managing an iPad classroom

This is a great post with some sound ideas. As the writer explains , not everyone agrees with him . Nevertheless, there are ideas here which are clearly working in a primary school classroom. I’ll look at what I do in a secondary classroom shortly. The more we share, the better we shall get.

Reflections of a Passionate Educator

So, every school now is rolling out their own BYOD and 1-to-1 programs. Mobile learning (mLearning) is the new black! Whether it is just a fad or not, mobile devices change the way the class runs, and they change the way students learn. Many teachers, from my experience, cite too many problems with using iPads in their classroom, most of them related to classroom management. As an eLearning leader, I get a lot of questions like ‘how do I guarantee the students are on-task?’, or ‘how do I make sure they don’t play games?’, or ‘how do I make sure I can maintain their attention when I need it?’. Reality is, these devices can be very distracting to adults even, let alone school-aged kids and teens. I have gathered a bunch of tricks throughout my teaching experience that I would like to share:

1- Set clear expectations: a lot…
