Compare two countries

France

Australia is 14 times bigger than France.

This site, comparea.org, allows you to compare the sizes of two countries and then gives you a little bit of information about both countries. Very handy for clearing up perceptions. A lot of people do not realise how huge Australia is and then many Australians don’t understand how small and densely populated other countries are. I got the link from the Teaching Ideas Facebook page, a site well worth subscribing to. It always has some really practical and relevant ideas for the classroom.

Take a Google Earth Flight

Google Earth flight simulatorYou need your 3D glasses, your armchair and a downloaded version of Google Earth. Windows 8 does not have an app in the app store. Once you have installed the Google Earth app onto your desktop, you go to Tools in the menu bar and click on the flight simulator. Choose your plane and start destination. The app will then come up with a tour guide bottom left and the images will be shown across the screen. Quite fun, really. Check out the rest of Google Earth because there is a lot more on offer than the flight simulator. I tried turning off the 3D but it doesn’t seem to want to co operate. I am not a fan of special 3D effects. That is what real life is for.

Australia is massive

Australia is bigThe one thing the internet does very well is give you visual feedback which is mindboggling. The capacity of the internet to deliver information in a visual form which will really make you think is astounding. As Australians, one of the things we find hard to explain is just how big Australia is. People don’t get it. These 17 maps put Australia into perspective for the rest of the world but even Australians will get a clear vision of just how big Australia is and will be able to explain it better. Buzzfeed is where you can look at 17 maps of Australia which will give you a clear idea of how massive Australia is. I love map 17.

Mapping the planet

Internet usageNothing like a good map and now you have choices. I have to thank @DJDanMurphy for posting this link into my Twitter feed. You never know when you will need a map and you never know when a map will provide inspiration for further thought and investigation. The one that really caught my eye was the real time global mapping of internet usage. You can really see how the east coast of Australia is lit up and how New Zealand is glitters all over with activity. The A Sheep No More site has 40 other maps for you to engage with and be fascinated by. Have fun.

Thar she blows!

wind patternsHave to say this is one internet site which really does blow you away. It’s mesmeric to watch. The Earth Wind Map site is totally interactive. You can spin planet earth, you can watch the winds move around the planet and see where the strongest breezes are. It was clear why we’d been having so much wind around in South Australia. It goes from black and white to the coloured version quickly and even if you do not want it for educational purposes, it is just a good site to know and consult. one for the HASS and SOSE teachers.
