Google photos

no photos

Google photos is designed to take the weight off your phone/tablet storage which is increasingly a problem in a world where we take and share photos and we want to be able to show photos to others. More and more people are making videos to post too. You can’t keep everything on your phone so cloud storage is possibly your answer. You don’t necessarily want Google to always back up and sync what you do . You are not able to delete the photos from Google photos . You can only archive them which isn’t right in my opinion. When we were in control of our devices we decided what we kept an what we deleted. Phone/tablet images are used for all sorts of reasons these days and some of that might be sensitive information. I should not be here making a case for anyone having control over their own images.

With Google Photos sync and back up you might want to switch that off and back up images you want when you want. The instructions for Android devices are here on know your mobile. Newatlas explains it from an iPhone point of view but also looks at the reasons you might want to be using Google photos and the advantages. The decision is yours and all I can say is what I have said before  – always check your settings.

Install iOS 8 on iPad or iPhone

Do you know why we need teachers on the internet? They take nothing for granted in learning. If you are trying to update a device you need to know about the settings.

People get devices and enjoy using them and then it all falls apart when they have to update or when they realise they could be doing other things with the device – like downloading apps. It’s not intuitive. It’s learned behaviour which you can either work out yourself or you can’t. Assuming people know how to connect their device to a computer and use iTunes as an alternative can be a big ask. Do they know where to put the cable? Do they know how to download iTunes? The video I have chosen to show how to update an iOS is of value since it does show some of the problems you might encounter. You do need to be connected to wifi. You to know what to do when the screen comes up with “Hello” when you had an iPad that was working fine until then. Settings, though , is critical. Everyone needs to know how to find and navigate the settings. You have to tap Settings then General , then Software Update to get started. The man who did the video about the app store might have thought he was funny writing on screen you need a finger/stylus , iPad and wifi to get started. It is that basic when someone doesn’t know what they are doing and is on totally unfamiliar ground. They need to be moved through a process one tiny step at a time with nothing taken for granted. No one should feel a failure because they cannot navigate a device. No one was made to feel a failure because they could not operate a TV or fridge. We need to make it that easy for everyone.

Are you logged out?

privacy

Check you are logged out

One of the unpleasant sides of human nature, it would appear, is if they find your account of any description is not logged out then they will go in and wreck it in one way or another. Friends and family seem to do this to others particularly on Facebook. My way of looking at it is to translate that behaviour into a REAL life situation. If you visited a friend or family member and their front door were unlocked and left open, what would you do? Would you go in and graffiti? Change their furniture? Write on their walls? Would you shut the door , secure it and let them know? If you find someone has forgotten to log themselves out – LOG THEM OUT. It’s about respect. It is particularly difficult if you are away or if you cannot easily go to where you logged into Facebook. Mobile people will be logging into Facebook on other computers. It’s back to CHECK YOUR SETTINGS. You go to settings top right, then privacy, account security and then click on account activity. Facebook will give you a list of computers which you are logged into or have been logged into. Next to each of them is an edit option. You can shut down any open sessions. This can be done on a mobile phone or tablet if you need to. You can always access your settings. It is also good to set Facebook to the secure settings and if you do have to use alternate devices and computers often to also activate the notifications of devices and Facebook will send you a message if you are logged into a computer/device you do not normally use. People need to be reminded that these options exist. You can protect yourself.

Is it a hoax?

magnifying glass Image : clckr Well, is it a hoax? We all wondered if Samsung really had paid Apple a billion dollars + in coins. Living the dream. Some people applied their knowledge and worked out it could not be possible for this reason and that reason. Their thinking was well founded. Most of us would rather someone just told us if it were a hoax or not. That’s why I use Snopes. It has up to date information about the misinformation on the Net. it gets the facts. It gets current input and then sets the picture straight. One of the latest hoaxes is a Facebook status update telling you that all your past private conversations are now appearing on your timeline. I checked and nothing private of mine has been published. Just the stuff which was originally on my wall in that year is still there. I then checked Snopes and they do have an article about it. If you want to remove past information which was published on your wall then you follow what it says in the status update:

There’s an easy fix–when you’re in your own timeline, just click on the year on the right (2007, 2008, 2009) and you’ll see a box with a bunch of friends’ messages and a header that says 89 people have written on so-and-so’s timeline–hover over the right until you see the pencil, click and select hide from timeline. Do that for each year.

You’ll see the little pencil on the right as you hover. Snopes is a handy way of keeping up with those sorts of privacy issues too as is regularly checking your settings on the sites you belong to.
