Is WordPress or Blogger better for SEO?

Good question , actually. I have always taught my students WordPress and how to use WordPress. It has made them think. It has forced them to learn how to put a blog together and it has given them a wealth of templates to choose from and customisations they can play with if they want to. Those were senior students, though. With younger ones I think I might have used Blogger and created group blogs or just one class blog. If it were just a class blog then I  could just as easily have used WordPress.  WordPress does take time to learn. Blogger is just there but you have to select the template carefully so that it looks good. I currently use Blogger and WordPress. I had shifted all my blogs onto WordPress but had left my first ever blog on Blogger until the traffic shifted over. It is a successful blog. The last post, which is highly visible, says I have moved and gives the new web address and yet, my old version is getting more traffic than my new one. My new one is advertised on Twitter. My original version has no promotion or social media connections. This is odd. Normally the SEO comes strongly from social media connections as part of the mix. So I am leaving my old blog on Blogger because this is intriguing. I have started a new blog on Blogger because I want to test it out to see how it goes. So far it is going well but I need to get it solidly established. I could then move it to WordPress. Blogger and WordPress play nicely together. What? And risk killing it? Like my original blog? I need to establish whether moving is a problem for successful blogs. My other blog which was not so successful on Blogger is going far better on WordPress. Do different blogging sites help the SEO of particular categories of content? Normally for SEO you are looking at:

1. Keywords like raspberry macarons, agile thinking, social media, atomic energy, search engine optimisation
2. Social media connections – you promote your blog content and posts in social media contexts to build a network and links
3. Tagging – you tag your posts so they are categorised. My year 10s last year turned this into an art form. They would come up with the most amazing tags because they were the tagging generation. It was a linguistic and aesthetic exercise for them . Tagging is important. Search engines need to know where to find your information
4. Image text – you need to fill in an alt text for the image and you need to say at least a sentence with a video or image so the search engines know what it is. The spiders which crawl over the net see text not images. I’ve used a web crawler. It’s surreal!
5. Content – It’s king. If you have what people are looking for they will come to your blog whether it’s on Blogger or WordPress.

WordPress can make SEO and connections easier because you can link the social media things very easily and you can add the twitter widget. It also has the reader where you get to see other blog posts and other people get to see yours too. The networking support is there for Blogger but doesn’t work as intuitively.

SEO for Beginners

SEO for BeginnersI have to thank Daragh Walsh for clarifying quite a few things about search engine optimisation on websites and pages. Each of his lectures was relevant, to the point and easy to follow. By the end of each lecture I knew what the benefit of doing it was and I knew what to do to apply the knowledge to my own situation. I didn’t particularly need the lecture on search engine optimisation for business sites but I learned a lot about how Google sets this up and so how it is working or not working for me when I am looking for a local business online. Daragh actually took the time during the course of the lectures to explain how to use the comments and questions sidebar in the Udemy courses. He is the first of the four lecturers to do that even thought they all invite you to use the question section. It is a good idea to have the sidebar but it is a better idea to explain its use and maybe each of the Udemy courses needs the first lecture to be that and one which is not counted towards the course but a generic explanation so that everyone knows what to do and is consistent in their approach. It might also help to suggest ways of using it effectively. This is my fourth free course so I have one more to do. In the four courses I have had different English language accents. This is great for anyone learning English but it is also great to see that Udemy is drawing on human resources from all over the world. In terms of what Daragh said in his SEO for Beginners , it builds authority and one of the most useful pieces of information I gleaned form this course was how to check and build authority on sites/pages. My next course is going to be Web Design for Web Developers: Build Beautiful Websites! by Jonas Schmedtmann and I am looking forward to it.

Blog Challenge #1 – add alt text

alt text When you add a picture to your blog post it is important to add the alternative text. Really important.

1. It helps with search engine optimisation.
2. It helps with assistive technologies if readers are vision impaired.
3. The spiders which crawl the web for information cannot see pictures. They read text. I don’t know if that is the case with real spiders!
4. If the web server cannot publish or show the pictures for any reason your text will still be there to alert readers to the fact you have an image.
5. You text might not be found but the alt text might be found and bring readers to your post.

Alt text is a safeguard and an optimization strategy.

Website Grader

picture of my website grade Website Grader has proven to be a very useful too. I found it about two months ago and when I first graded my website I had a lot of laughs, because Website Grader keeps you really entertained while it is crunching through your site, then I got a lot of really helpful information. At that stage this site was rated 84%. I followed the tips for improving my website and now it is graded at 90% so I am both grateful for and pleased with the help I received. It pays to ask! One other useful thing I have discovered through this Website Grader is that tying my Twitter account to this blog has helped promote the blog. Social media work! This site also has had a good teaching component in getting me to understand how to improve my standing and search engine optimisation. The advice I got and continue to get is very specific , so I can follow through on it easily.

Google Trends

Google Trends gives you a chance to look at the search volume index and trends for your region or any other region in the world. It will also give you an idea of the languages being used for the searches and in South Australia it was English, Chinese and German. You can refine your search by year, month, last 30 days and so on. We can come up with a wealth of information. It is a matter or knowing that the information is there should you want to use it! The USA gets the hot topics and hot searches too. I guess our turn will come!
