Match Three with STEAM components

STEAM Where would we be without gamification? I have just used the STEAM acronym and tried to find three indicators of each which start with the same letter to be indicative of meeting the component in lesson planning and delivery. This is a work in progress. It is not definitive and I have shared it so that others can be encouraged to break down the components of STEAM (Science, Technology , Engineering, Arts, Maths) into an applied model which is easy for teachers to consult as they think and plan. We need something like the Bloom’s Taxonomy – a STEAM Taxonomy to pin us all down and get us thinking in a more consistent fashion. I have a mix of verbs and adjectives. I’d prefer one or the other so that is my next challenge. Just throwing it out there.

Cross curriculum apps

cross curriculum appsI subscribe to the SimpleK12 teacher learning community site. Some of the resources are paid but if you subscribe to the site you get notification of the free resources as well. This time it was 20 apps for cross curriculum work. I knew a lot of the apps but others of them I did not know. They were Android and iPad apps so that is even handier. You can follow the link here if you are interested and it’s a site worth keeping in touch with. Some good apps for maths, science and EALD/ESL but other worthwhile apps too.

Genes in Space – help cure cancer

2014 is unbelievable. Genes in Space is living proof we can collaborate as a planet, pool our resources and skills, work cross curriculum and find a cure for cancer. If the whole planet could do that it would be amazing and if we did that by being ourselves with our own skills and capacity to learn it would be even better. Cancer Research UK has collaborated with gamers and the gaming industry to get all the data from their cancer research into a playable form so that players can help search through the data!!! A scientist or group of scientists would take too long and so a cure would be too far away. In all this data could be the genetic flaws which create cancer. More than 200,000 people have classified almost two million cancer images. Human eyes are good and better at detecting anomalies. Read the BBC Play to Cure article. Watch the video. Download the app!! We do not need cancer.

Brain vs Computer

The video is a bit strange at times but the content is interesting. How does a human brain compare with a computer and does it matter? I have never considered computers to be a replacement for me – just an enhancement. They can make lots of things easier and more interesting. I also think when we look at computer capacity and then our brains it helps us to understand that we don’t really make sufficient use of our brains. The comments underneath the video on YouTube are interesting. The video is a good way to think about technology and where it fits in with us and what its purpose might be. One of the commenters comes up with this information to help clarify the comparison between brain and computer:

Brain: 2200000000000000 flops = 2200000000 Megaflops = 2200 Teraflops. Super computer = 8200000000 Megaflops = 8200 Teraflops

Brains do not process information as quickly but brains can do other things like think or is that just executing commands?

Encourage citizen scientists

Project Noah Project Noah makes great use of mobile technology and is well suited to upper primary, junior secondary students. It is an app which is designed to help them discover their local environment. There are awards to be earned and an opportunity to see how others who belong to the project are doing. The app is colourful and clear. Students can help identify finds but also discover things as well. They can participate in challenges and generally learn how to share information online and then see what can be done with that information. They can see that by collaborating and taking on challenges they can contribute to research and a wide body of  global knowledge. The app is free and ran really well on my iPad but it would suit a smart phone easily and so contribute to making good use of those expensive pocket devices. Great believer in developing ideas and challenges for mobile technology so that students have better options for use.
