Compare the size of two countries

mapfightWe wanted to compare the size of Australia and Quebec in class. It wasn’t an option on the other site I blogged about in Compare Two Countries. I found MapFight which offers quite a number of places to be compared. Once my class could see Quebec fitted into South Australia and then stretched into the Northern Territory they understood how big an area Quebec covers . These students know how big Australia is so to find something equally massive was impressive.

Compare two countries

France

Australia is 14 times bigger than France.

This site, comparea.org, allows you to compare the sizes of two countries and then gives you a little bit of information about both countries. Very handy for clearing up perceptions. A lot of people do not realise how huge Australia is and then many Australians don’t understand how small and densely populated other countries are. I got the link from the Teaching Ideas Facebook page, a site well worth subscribing to. It always has some really practical and relevant ideas for the classroom.

Australia is massive

Australia is bigThe one thing the internet does very well is give you visual feedback which is mindboggling. The capacity of the internet to deliver information in a visual form which will really make you think is astounding. As Australians, one of the things we find hard to explain is just how big Australia is. People don’t get it. These 17 maps put Australia into perspective for the rest of the world but even Australians will get a clear vision of just how big Australia is and will be able to explain it better. Buzzfeed is where you can look at 17 maps of Australia which will give you a clear idea of how massive Australia is. I love map 17.

Mapping the planet

Internet usageNothing like a good map and now you have choices. I have to thank @DJDanMurphy for posting this link into my Twitter feed. You never know when you will need a map and you never know when a map will provide inspiration for further thought and investigation. The one that really caught my eye was the real time global mapping of internet usage. You can really see how the east coast of Australia is lit up and how New Zealand is glitters all over with activity. The A Sheep No More site has 40 other maps for you to engage with and be fascinated by. Have fun.

E-learning with National Geographic

The National Geographic Xpeditions site provides a wide variety of customizable maps for online or traditional learning. The site also offers lesson ideas, online resources and activities which will help to teach students effectively about our world. The site runs very cleanly and is very easy to navigate . The pageloading is impressive.
