Sustainable living – CD repurposing

I have just made one of these drop spinners from a couple of old DVDs and it works like a charm. It is a good way to recycle, reuse, repurpose and create something which is functional. I find the CD drop spinner very easy to use because I can easily get the clockwise twirl with one hand as I hold the yarn with the other. It is all good thinking. You have to trouble shoot, look for bits which will make the drop spindle and find the fibre which works the best. You can start with cotton wool balls to get started. it teaches hand eye co ordination, develops peripheral skills and then you have to develop a rhythm. The CDs can be decorated to get a nice pattern as you twirl them. The video is evidence of life long learning and a commitment to a sustainable planet. I actually used the backs of teddy plastic eyes to hold the CDs in place and then some grommets to buffer the CDs. I also used some beads to weight the bottom of the stick. It’s a great maker learning project. There are written instructions on World in a spin.

Printable minis

printable minisSmall Stuff is a site dedicated to producing printable versions of miniature items so people can decorate and construct tiny things and tiny doll’s house scale miniatures. There are lots of resources on the site and it’s a place to find those sorts of tiny things but it is also a site to which you could contribute if you are interested.

Little weekend maker projects

So what did you think? Shake the Future has put up 3 little DIY projects which involve recycling and has then asked for comments. If you read the comments there are some which are of no help. Other people have looked at the video and moved the ideas forward and offered some good suggestions. When you comment in a positive way, if someone asks for your opinion or help, then you allow yourself and others to grow ideas. I actually liked the fridge magnet project probably because it is cold and wet outside today and having the oven on would be a nice thing. I , too , thought he was going to turn the Rubrik’s cube into a clock. You can hear the disappointment that he didn’t . So who is going to make the Rubrik’s cube clock? The video has created impetus with that idea. Doing and sharing work. Doing and soliciting feedback work. It’s how some people use social media so their ideas create more ideas. They stimulate reactions and thoughts  in others and  gain valuable feedback to keep their own thoughts and projects moving along.

Old books as art

Like one of the commenters on this clip , I didn’t know whether to be disturbed or inspired by this. I was brought up with a huge respect for books and the knowledge and creativity they could bring to my life. As a mother I realised I had preached the message well when my daughter was horrified I was going to dispose of the blue Webster dictionary she had grown up with and we had always used and replace it by a brand , spanking new dictionary. The Webster now has a place of honour in her home. I do think we need to move on and I do think we need to move past paper. Some of these works of art are created from very old books which I would have thought had a cultural and archival value. Maybe not. Maybe we already have preserved other copies. If we move away from paper then we shall have all these excess books and to reinvent them into works of art which bring a clear artistic and cultural message is amazing and better than throwing them away. We do need to honour books. I was wondering what I’d do with my set of encyclopedias. Remember when we all thought someone was a genius because they had actually read the encyclopedia Britannica one volume at a time? Those people were revered. Can anyone read the whole of Google? These book artists , though, are making an interesting statement. They are not only very talented and imaginative they are making books spectacular for the visual messages they can now create. You can see more examples on the TED Ideas Gallery and decide where you stand.

Easy New Year greeting card

You might not want to send an electronic greeting for the New Year. You might actually want to make a greeting card. The beauty of the internet is that those with skills and ideas can share them. This is a very effective card and the video is composed so that interest and understanding are sustained. The idea of putting a paint brush in a compass is novel but as I sat and watched I was wondering if it would be that easy! Someone has a lot of skill. It is all about confidence. I guess if you couldn’t do the painted circles you could get the trusty textas out and draw around things…
