Thinking Kit

Thinking KitThis  free Thinking Kit app is designed for iPads and for students to work in pairs to promote collaboration and some real thinking as they learn. It can be used solo. I have downloaded it onto my iPad and there are examples of what you can do with this app. I would imagine it would suit some subject areas better than others and some activities better than others. I was going to look at it to see if you could use it for language learning. The site for Thinking Kit provides a lot of support and what I like about his type of app is that it allows you to work your way through what it can do so that you learn as a teacher. You can try different things and see what the app can achieve. It is also a good app for getting student feedback so they are partners in learning. You can work with them to create better tasks and improved learning scenarios. You can create the activities in any browser on any device. Since this is a hands on app, I’ll let you look and explore.

Rain, rain app

rain, rain appIt is advertised as the sleep app. The rain, rain app is designed to help you drift into your dreams. We all know teachers need their sleep. It’s a great app with beautiful images and lovely rain sounds. It could be used to inspire writing – On a dark and stormy night… It could be used to create rainy ambient sounds for creative purposes. There are sounds besides rain. The app is available on all devices.

Sticky notes HD

Sticky notes HDSticky notes HDI am on my iPad and rather than read about the seven mistakes I could be making vacuuming (I kid you not), I have decided to share Sticky notes HD with you. It costs just over a dollar and I know there are other sticky notes apps for free. They are not colourful and flexible like this one. The range of colours is lovely. There are also filters you can apply or you can use your own image as a background. You can change the font size and choose between black or white and you can use your camera to add images. It means you can make a high powered, customized note for a specific purpose or just your common and garden variety. I could see it having a good use with the iPads in class but it is not something I can expect because it is a paid app. Your note can be viewed several ways so it means you can take screen shots for different purposes if you wish. Sticky notes HD is more interesting to use but also offers more options for making notes.

Vintage cam app

vintage cam I saw someone use this app on their iPad over Christmas. It looked really good. Vintage cam is very easy to use and I found it easier than the generic iPad camera app. It instantly made better pictures for some reason. There is the free version so you can try it out with most of the effects and then the paid version for 99 cents where you get 4 more effects and no ads. The ads are not intrusive. It’s just a nice camera app which works on Apple devices and obviously an alternative to Instagram because you can share your images if you want to. Do I need Instagram? No. Do I need Vintage Cam – why yes, I really like the image effects and it has made my iPad more useful as a camera.
