Colour your world

PANTONE 15-0343 Greenery is the colour of the year for 2017. Pantone is  one of the significant industry standards for colours and colour integrity. They are there to make money, yes, but they are also there to set standards, create ideas, inspire design in a visual world and all of that is important with technology. It’s not just about fashion. It’s about film, user interfaces, video software, gaming.  Just think about it. How much of our technological world is determined by our visual experience and much of that is related to authentic colour and the use of colour? The Pantone matching system is here on cal-print.com.  Printed colours and digital colours are not identical. Colour charts can be used to get the best match . Mixedmedia has some troubleshooting guides. Even engineers and scientists should worry about colour and there is a good research paper about that here by Rogowitz and Treinish at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Center. Colour matters in a visual world.

Colour your teaching

If the only thing you do is watch this video, you have done well. It speaks for itself and is beautiful. When my daughter was at art school, one of the first assignments they had, was to build an installation which focussed on one colour. Hers happened to be green. As part of her audience experience she wanted to make a green cake. She went outside and got some fuchsia leaves and asked me if I could make green chocolate leaves to go on her cake like the ones she had chosen. I washed the leaves , dried them and painted them with green chocolate. When her cake was made we peeled off the real leaves and had the chocolate ones for her to decorate the cake. She then took a photo of it on some little camera around at the time which printed up a small photo of the cake she had baked. It was not only a good mother and daughter moment, it was a good teaching a learning moment. I learned that if you focussed on one thing and explored it from all angles it was a deeply satisfying and inspirational way to learn. From then on I applied that in my classroom. With technology you can focus on one thing from all sorts of angles. You can teach content in multimodal ways and bring about a deeper understanding and a much better sense of what the learning is about. Looking at teaching through an artist’s lens means you have the opportunity to truly engage someone’s mind and creativity by immersing them through studied focus which then builds on itself.

Repper

Repper is a pretty cool online tool for creating patterns and backgrounds using your own images. For me, as a quilter, I can see the possibilities to create some pretty amazing quilts and for getting help with colour selection and palettes! Repper means you use your own images for backgrounds and embellishment and that personal touch means you are more involved with the process of design. There is a professional version which does more but the lite version is easy to use and you can download the finished pattern to your computer. Given a lot of sites encourage you to provide your own decorating and backgrounds, then Repper is worth having in your toolbox, but it is also a site you can use for making your own cards, business cards and anything of that nature and you know the designs will be unique.
