Job skills 2016

I was fortunate enough to work in a school today as a mock job interviewer. It was an interesting experience to see how senior students prepared themselves and managed a job interview. They were all pretty good on the presentation of themselves and social skills. They were all nice talk to. That is important I think. People don’t forget you if they like you and you probably need to make a genuine relationship with the interviewer. All the students could do that. What they could not do so well was notice the skills they actually had and talk to those. This is the value of practice and simulation. Some did not realise that because of the skills they had then technology would actual help promote them because they could photograph or video their activities and themselves doing the sorts of things they were talking about. You Tube has plenty of videos about how to present for job interviews and the best things people can say or do. One of the recommendations in the video I have selected is that you are passionate. There were two today who were passionate about what they were talking about. It showed. It made them the best. Because they were passionate they naturally understood collaboration with others but could not articulate collaboration as a skill. It was clear they knew how to apply their knowledge in a growth way if they worked for you. They could respond to questions about different people and scenarios and so had an understanding of how you involve others and how you make them want to grow and learn.

All the students could communicate pleasantly and effectively.You had a sense that they ere nice people. The two who stood out could demonstrate their understanding of the other three skills. They knew it was important to have a growth mindset, to network and create good experiences for others. They could see how you could develop a business and so would be great on a team because they had vision and it was surprising how well they understood strategic thinking for a company . They were also very inventive in how they dealt with scenarios. It’s important ,then, that we offer them videos in what the skills actually are and what they look like. You have to be very competent to coach ice hockey. What skills does that break down into? That is why I chose the video I did. It goes some way to explain what the skills are and mean, where the ideas are sourced and which ones are easy to demonstrate and show.
