Visual résumés

I first blogged about visual résumés in 2010 with a Powerpoint example which had become very popular at the time. In six years the global interactions have become closer. People can work live and study anywhere. Video calling is mainstream and students are very used to the visual media of Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube. It is really important that in a visual, connected world where your future might be anywhere on the planet that you can present yourself visually. The video gives you an idea of how that could be done. There are more conservative visual résumés on YouTube and Microsoft India has put out quite a funny one which makes a good point. Visual résumés are a very quick way of letting people know who we are , where we come from and why we are of value to them.

There are graphic design résumés too which are not only very striking, they can present information in a way which has a positive impact and can be absorbed more easily than plain text. A graphic résumé can help someone orientate themselves to you , your life and your value. You can add maps, languages, IT skills, other skills, awards , interests and experience in a more meaningful way which does justice to you and your capabilities.

Students need practice in creating visual résumés so they can play around with the ideas and approaches and then work out , by gaining thoughtful and considered feedback, how to best represent themselves to the world. One of the things they tend to do is underrate the skills they have and are not aware of how they can document those skills . Visual résumés make it possible for them to annotate their attributes on familiar ground. This Pinterest site by Elaine Edmonds has a wide variety of examples of graphic CVs to look at and to get ideas. You might also find my post Creating a digital profile helpful.
