Back on Tackk

There are some nice Christmas things on Tackk. I went back there this week with my students because it was the perfect place to be at the end of the school year. We have been learning about how the French celebrate Christmas as I have explained in earlier posts. To capitalise on all this learning I wanted them to put it into action by creating something of their own which used their newly found knowledge. On Tackk you can combine image and text. I had suggested to my students they do a Tackk to represent a French Christmas and use what we have learnt. Then I suggested they should share a Tackk on their representation of an Australian Christmas. On Tackk they are sharing globally so they are aware their efforts are going to be viewed by others. They are also on a site where they are competing for attention and so they know they have to stand out in the crowd. I then suggested another couple of ideas for French but straight away I got : Can I do one on French breakfast? Can I do one on the French Revolution? Can I do one on TinTin? Is this how you say breakfast? Can you come and check if I have written this properly? These were my year 8s and 9s and it was the penultimate day of the school year. Perfect test for Tackk and technology. They won. My students were very absorbed and they wanted to get their Tackk right. Their work was very creative, well thought out, accurate and the Australian Christmas was done with humour which was interesting. Their look at an Australian Christmas was very light hearted and that is what they were sharing. I realise Tackk will be a good tool for next year now we have had a bit of a practice run. Tagging could be more intuitive and easier, though. It is not as effective as on other sites. I also have to work out how I will see student work. This week I have gone around the class and looked at what they have done. Tackk will be a good first step in training students to blog. One Tackk could be like a blog post and they would get feedback on it and get used to being in the public arena with their work. I’ll have a closer look at Tackk in the holidays and familiarise myself even better with the site, probably on a 45 degree Adelaide summer’s day when I need to sit inside out of the scorching sun . So far it is proving to be very useful in class.
