Teachers are trail blazers

In 2010 Xerox had the idea of Trailmeme software and then social media and blogging really took off in a different way and we have become the trail meme creators. This is a great video. It demonstrates so clearly what we do as educators. The internet is full of information. A lot of it is blurry and poorly conceived. Some of it is wrong. Some of it is misinformation. As a teacher you need to be constantly on the alert for creating the right memes for correct information or at the very least, the information that comes from a reputable source. Ratatouille is not named after the Disney film. How many types of cheeses are there in France ? 365? 367? 700? My year 8 students had an interesting challenge trying to get their facts right this week but the lessons we learned in research were invaluable. As a teacher you have to connect the websites, software, apps, gadgets, devices, OS’s so the students have a clearer picture. Some times they fill in the gaps on the trail but as a teacher I am the one who has to establish whether it is educationally sound to share that information. One student was using a great site for an exercise to do with clothing we were doing in French. I got her to show me. Now, that is important. Students are partners in this creation of trail memes. It was a good conversation and the site she had found has good educational value for our purposes. I go in with my information but I encourage the students to make sound suggestions. It then gives us all better options for the right tools for the task and sound information for the research. Two students brought there work to me in Open Office format. They hadn’t noticed there is an option to save it as a different format. Students just save. We have to teach them to use the drop down box and choose the best file format option for the purpose. The video highlights the sorts of things we now do as teachers which are critical and crucial. It is also why we have to network with others. There is a lot to know when it comes to finding good practice. You cannot know it all. Sharing and feed back have to be built in to the way we operate these days.
