Mobile devices in class

mobile phone use in class It is  interesting watching how people use mobile devices and how so many people now are becoming more interesting with and adventurous about their use. One young teacher uses his phone to remember how to connect devices or will photograph laptop screens as he is learning to do something. For him, it is a visual memory bank and that is a great classroom use of mobile devices. They can be used to “take notes” visually . I saw one girl last year prop her phone up on the computer and she had all her Evernote information on her phone and was turning it into an assignment on her computer. My year 8s, who don’t have laptops, use their mobile devices for dictionaries and for finding and learning words. They also love it if they have to go on the Net to find something out and report back. Mobile phones and iPod Touches are really good learning devices if we know what we can do with them – what their limits are as well as their possibilities. One of my students spent ages making a really good movie in the Story Maker app on the iPad. She wanted her own copy so she recorded it with her phone. I thought that was a really good use of her phone because she was going to show her parents what she had done in class and it had taken her a double lesson. She had created the story and put the French in. For that double lesson she was lost in creativity and learning. Totally absorbed. Her parents and friends ought to see what she had done. We were going to save it in Dropbox but she was having trouble signing in over our network for some reason. The phone saved the day or she would have had to have waited. Time for some mobile activity and possibility lists, I feel.
